Everytime when i read in the forum and use a link it gets redirected over this site: redirect.viglink.com As iam using a pi-hole at home I always have to copy my links over and delete this redirect part. So my question is, does the forum get some money from that link or is it just some kind of standard configuration? I could get thru all the lists from the adblocker and delete this one, but i am not sure, is it in there for a reason? Because a lot of spam sites and pop ups are in the lists.
ProBoards is basically a free service and Robert only pays very little, mainly for having banner ads removed and enabling a custom URL. Otherwise he (and I) don't have to do any work to keep the code updated, manage attacks or care for uptime of the service. Overall a really good deal, I think.
I think there is nothing nefarious about this, just a very unobtrusive way of ProBoards to earn some revenue from a "free" service.
Please let me know if you have any other concerns about this and I can bring this to the attention of the ProBoard admins, their support forum is very active and actually they are quite responsive.
Kaspersky doesn't seem to like the Viglink redirects. However, I tell Kaspersky to shove it regarding the links off of here, since I trust the origin point, and I get that this is a prepackaged forum, ergo it's likely to have "features" like that. And thus far, it's been just fine...no mystery redirects to assaultive adverts, 50,000,000 popups, none of that.
Its totally OK for me if the forum is cheaper then, I just wasn't sure about it, I just will delete it from my lists maybe or copy it over like I always do. I don't have a problem with commercials to finance websites, I just don't like stuff that knows more about me after some years as myself, because I forget stuff.
VigLink is a company that helps ProBoards earn money from links to online merchants. When you click link to a website outside of your forum, VigLink checks to see if that website is a part of their affiliate program. If it is, VigLink will make sure that ProBoards gets credit for visitors that have clicked on the link. This means that if a purchase is made through the linked website, ProBoards may earn some revenue from that purchase. We believe this is a good experience for both ProBoards members and ProBoards itself because the process is seamless and does not involve adding any extra banner ads to the forum. Why am I seeing every link on my forum as a VigLink link?
If you are using an ad-blocker or script-blocker, we detect that and automatically fix the links on the page to ensure we get credit for them going through VigLink. ProBoards makes money from advertising, so we appreciate if you can disable your ad-blocker or script-blocker while on our site.
For those who are still bothered, it's possible to block the script using a custom filter in uBlock Origin.
