What is your difficult music? I.e. that genre that does not click because you don't get it. Mine must be harsh noise, I know this might sound weird coming from me, since I like my music noisy and with some dirt under the nails but harsh noise has just not clicked with me (yet). Perhaps I have to check some specific artist, I like some of merzbow's work but appart from that it all sounds the same and I fail to hear the difference between 2 tracks and a lot of it just annoys me but perhaps I just have to approach it as an auditive reset/palet cleanser? I like free jazz so I don't have issues per se with abstract sounds but the harsh/japanoise is (still) a bridge too far. Any noise freaks here who can enlighten me?
Christian hair metal on the other hand is not difficult I just think it's absolute shit and you don't need to convince me otherwise.

Harsh Noise isn't really meant to be enjoyed, it's kind of the point. I'll say also it is kind of a live thing, where you also get physically assaulted by the sound.

When I think of harsh noise I always have the stereotypical image in mind of the potential school shooter flailing over a picnic table filled with shitty guitar pedals surrounded by fellow greasy haired youth bobbing their head to some imperceivable rhythm or melody

Weirdly, reggae. Roots reggae, modern, whatever, I just do not get it at all. I've had friends play me their favorite thing, but in the end, nope. And old-school dub. It just does not click with me in any way. I can get into the usual lazy music listener least-favorites, rap and country (depending on the musicians-- trucks'n'guns'n'AMERICA-WHOOOO stuff doesn't do it for me at all, but I like, say, Kacey Musgraves or Fred Eaglesmith or old-school bluegrass and stuff) but just not reggae. I dunno. Not super excited about free jazz, either, but I can at least get into that a bit when I'm in the right mood.

For me it's Mumble Rap and German "Schlager" The worst of the latter is definitely this song! Pure torture!

Nothing makes me puke more than traditional christmas songs, opera and now it seems German "Schlager"...........but I feel nothing for mainstream Country music, don't get it. I love Blues, Folk and offshoots but for me cm is nothing and so difficult to listen to.

Regarding noise (the genre): I wasn't aware of the genre at all before 2015; I saw a performance accidentally (that took place right before I was playing together with some guys) and I was immediately blown away, shocked, speechless; and as Gaëtan mentioned, is had to do alot with the physical experience. pt3r , haha, indeed, the guy was " flailing over a picnic table filled with shitty guitar pedals"! I found the photo I took back then : Attachments:

I just don't "get" most rap/hip-hop music - it was exciting when it first arrived but now just seems to be the same old bland shit to me. As with any genre there are exceptions, but that's my choice for this topic. Most genres/artists I can name at least one song I like, or even love....

Hmm, it seems like the thread turned into the ‘music i don’t like’ thread whereas my first post really wanted to understand noise music and try to understand the appeal in it. I don’t hate it I just don’t understand it, perhaps I must, as suggested, experience it live. I better not forget those earplugs.

Yeah, there are a bunch of musical genres that work better live. Sitting down and listening to noise on headphones can be interesting, but I think to really appreciate it you need to be in a venue with a powerful PA and have it wash over you and engulf you and annihilate your consciousness. It's not a laptop-speakers genre. (although now I'm sure somebody is going to point out some "ambient noise" type recording, but that's not really what I mean.)

The ambient noise I have plenty of since I got my AE modular system The real power/harsh/japanoise is probably a lot like SUNN they have more impact live than on a headphone. Merzbow on the other hand, has made some recordings which I liked quite a bit but they were probably more on the 'mainstream' side of the noise spectrum. Never thought I would put Merzbow and mainstream in the same sentence.

It is not the genre which define the quality of music. Each genre has good and terrible examples.
Excelent music we can remember and we recognize with the first beat!
Difficult music do not go to our mind and surely not to our heart! Nothing we can remember when we hear it a second time!
