Try working through the patch examples in the paper 'Quick Start Guide' that came with your rack.

It would be easier to check if the patch is correct

hello thankyou for getting back to me i built my ae bit by bit i just dont understand osc to vca to audio out bus gate (from where} to env gate in envout to vca cv this should give me sound when i play a note on my midi kybd but does not work unfortunately Perhaps I can try to help as I'm still a bit of a beginner myself. For a start, running through the Quick Start guide is an excellent thing. So I'd echo that and take your time and go through it again, until you work out what bit is trying to do what. But to address your point about MIDI. When you have your keyboard connected via MIDI in, the BUS signals are automatically what the MIDI keyboard provides. So you don't need to worry about where the bus gate comes from - it comes from there, and ANY of those bus gates on any of teh modules is the same thing - they're connected. So, assuming I had a MIDI keyboard connected to the MIDI input on the AEM, if I want notes to sound, I would use the CV (not gate) to control the pitch of the note (in other words, the CONTROL VOLTAGE that adjusts the pitch of the oscillator or whatever you're using. The other thing, if you're say using a sequence or arpeggiation (any series of looped notes) you will need the clock signal as well or it just won't progress to the next note. So in your case to get your keyboard controlling your AEM, you need to have that MIDI cable plugged into the MIDI IN, and you take the BUS CV for pitch, and BUS CLK for the timing. YOu can plug them into ANY Of those ports as all buses are connected. To explain further, say you are wanting to use a VCO or OSC/d - assuming you have that MIDI cable already inserted, patch a wire on the input side of the VCO thus - BUS CV to CV. Boom, that's your notes sorted.

No problem at all (and sorry for the delay in responding - having some medical issues atm).
As others have said here, if you have a nose through the manuals via that link, you should be able to have a hands-on tinker while readin (which I find is always the best way to learn things like this).
There's also The 5th Volt's Youtube channel which goes through many of the modules and explains stuff (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHDFWYiPTvjb3sd8Oa38hYQ).
But if you have any more general questions, if they aren't in the manual section, by all means ask away here - there are no stupid questions!

It takes a bit...modulars definitely have an initial learning curve to them, but once you've gotten past that, what you learn with the AE will work on pretty much ANY modular setup. And also, it'll give you a much better idea of what's going on in a prepatched synth so that you can get optimal results out of them, too.

thanks lugia semi modular is alot easier to understand you never have to start from scratch. this modular thing is a wake up call i didnt think it would be so hard i am running 2osc?d -vco-wasp filter-2vca-noise-2s&h-2env-2lfo-seq16-mixer4-4 i have a wonkystuff turing machine coming plus a beat divider. which leaves 5 slots can i ask what would you put in there?

For starters, consider a Waveshaper...it's a great device for wringing new timbres out of basic VCO waveforms. Then a Slew/Edge would be useful for portamento, in addition to the other things you can make it do. Third up, since there's a SEQ16 in there, would be the Quantizer. And since this is kinda short on effects processing, the last two would probably be best filled by the MULTIFX. I think those would definitely take your build to the next level.
