Anyone interested to help me out with a DIY idea? I got a walkman which I want to convert it into a "module". Basically I'm planning to do a speed mod, cv input for speed and have a switch for play/stop. I've the schematic and I know my way with soldering. I've some basic knowledge of electronics, but definitely not enough to make this work (I think). Any1 here with spare time for an apprentice?

Nice idea I have once destroyed a dictaphone trying a similar thing. Haha! But it’s still something I’d like to do as well. Maybe I’ll go shopping for another cheap secondhand dictaphone again. Can you share the circuits that you already have? I guess for the play/stop control with a gate signal, one could use a relay or maybe even just a transistor to switch on the motor’s power. Regarding the tape speed, I would think one could change this with a variable resistor (potentiometer for manual control, vactrol for CV). I hope to find some DIY time very soon as well and might try something like this out as well. Please keep us posted about your progress

It would be easy to do with an Arduino.
Arduino reads CV via analog input, then controls cassette motor speed via analog out (PWM).
Probably need a few components on the analog out side to control current higher than the Arduino pins can handle. (TIP120 transistor + diode + resistor).
A small cheap Arduino Nano could easily handle this, even for 2 or 3 cassette players..
Hmmm i think everything needed for this might be floating around in my basement.......
Unfortunately i have broken something i my left shoulder so i'm "one handed" for a while....

Sorry for not getting back! Had an intense couple of weeks. Unfortunately no significant progress yet (due to the lack of time), but all the help already provided will help a lot already. When I've more to share, I'll definitely do!

That's a bit out of context, sorry about that, but just remembered this post after watching this synth ("piano") idea on controlling motors via cv and then using guitar pickups and photosensitive transistors to get the final analogue sound. Seems to be a quite easy project. Though maybe to try it with AE modular. A few weeks ago needed to test a few servo motors, and in fact the easiest way was just to hoop up LFO directly to servo signal input. Worked quite well, but have to be very careful and precise.
