I have been looking into modular for the unique utilities it can offer eg. Quantisation, Sample and Hold, mid-chain effects etc. This has lead me to look at AE Modular due to the sheer amount of variation and having the luxury of more tried and true synths for the original sounds. My current setup means I have plenty of Oscillators, LFOs and Filters. As such I am looking at the current set to get started with: - Master
- 4 I/O
- Sample & Hold
- 4Attmix fader
- 2vca
- Quantiser
- 2SignalAmp (mainly for amplifying signals to use in the Mother ext. In)
- Grains
- Beat Divider
Lots more fun seeming modules such as the Drum and Drone modules but I can't get too greedy! Am I missing anything particular? I will continue to do effects post-hoc via Ableton as I record through by interface so don't need effects and probably use either my iPad or Grains for drums to begin with. Clear omissions are an LFO and Filter but I plan on making use of the ext in on my Mother or Minilogue for that.

You are missing envelopes, unless the sounds come from the eurorack which then begs the question what do you need the vca for? Same question goes for the s&h you don't seem to have anything to trigger apart from the beat divider but nothing to sample unless you will use the grains as a random source? I'm confused.

Hey, I'm the redditor who sent you here! I think you got a good start, but I would also throw in a bit of 'bread and butter' modules to get some complex modulation going on, as that seems your end goal! I think the 2ENV module would be a great addition: you can let it loop itself, and so you actually get a really complex LFO-type thing where you can control the length (decay/attack) with CV inputs. It really takes a normal LFO to the next level: you can for example module the 2ENV with an LFO from you Moog, and the you get eg a 'wuuub wuuuub wuub wuub wubwub wbwb wub wub wuuub' instead of just a clean 'wub wub' and you get 2 of these in one package! I would def leave the 2VCA in place, even tho you do not plan to really use sound as input, it is also great to modulate CV inputs, so to use my prior style, you'd get for example 'wuuub wuuuub wuUB WUB WUB WB wbwb wub wub wuuub'. I would maybe swap the Beat Divider for the MM-Divider, if you are using CV clock out from your Moog. However if you plan to clock via midi, the Beat Divider might be better at it (but with a more limited musical functionality). I'm also not sure whether you need the 2SignalAmp. AE Modular can not amp above 5V, because its entire system is run at 0-5V. So the AE itself will never be possible to output a signal above that 5V. I don't know the Moog Mother really well, but I used the Behringer quasi-clone in the past with my AE, and didnt need the SignalAmp. And the last MUST HAVE i'd like to add, is the third party module 'RBSS' by Wonkystuff. It is a fantastic little module that lets you generate semi-random CV in a very fun and explorative way. Def one of the types of modules that make patches come to live. Other maybe interesting modules: - Noise module (makes you generate random triggers in combination with Sample & Hold) - Algodrone (personal favorite of mine, generates a wild variaty of all types of sounds, very nice for metallic sounds that might be useful for your genre!) - Slew/edge (provides extra ways to modulate CV) Anyway, hope you'll have great fun! Btw, I heard that if you send a mail to Tangible Waves that this is your 'starter rack', they often offer it you at the same discount as the classic Starter Rack I, just with the modules of your choice included (also, admin maybe this belongs more in another sub board with the general talk?)

Yes the sound comes from my Mother 32 and other external synths. I was hoping to feed sounds and clock from my other synths into the 4 I/O and use this rack for more complex modulation. But perhaps I do need more basic blocks. I was definitely questioning if I needed more envelopes.

For a start, I think it will do the job just fine, but yes, envelopes can be a great addition

The idea behind this is to boost ext audio from non eurorack (eg, iPad or Minilogue). Moog ext audio requirements are +-10v so I need a slight amplification for some of my signals not to get lost.

Yeah, so what I meant is that the AE 2SignalAmp will also not be able to boost above 5V. The 2SignalAmp is made mainly for signals that are very low (eg below 1V), to get these up to the AE 5V standard. If you want to make the AE stuff higher than 0-5V, you either need to use some amplification in external gear, or you can build something small yourself with <10 electronics components (I'd certainly help you out with this on the DIY forum). However, most synths use fairly low signals for CV stuff, so my bet would be that your Moog will just listen fine to the AE Modular. But can't guarantee it ofc as I don't have a moog.

You can never have too many envelopes and vca's in your rack, envelopes can be turned into trigger delay, oscillators, lfos ... enough vcas will let you sidechain kick drums etc... logic modules are also super interesting for less obvious sequencing/synthesizing. Beginners tend to forget these basic modulation and routing modules in favor of the fancy oscillators and filters etc but the bread and butter modules will help you to shape the output of those fancy modules in a sound that is yours.
