Hi All,
After creating a homemade studio stand I decided to make a folding travel case in order to be able to tuck away my AE modular when I wasn't using it and when I wanted to bring it to the local synth meet. Still working on some hardware details for the travel case but I think my first attempt turned out pretty well.
I am also considering making these to order for people, but wanted to gauge interest first. I'm thinking the price would be anywhere between $50 - $150 depending on different options (such as unpainted, painted or danish oil finish, wood choice, ect) If there's interest I'll figure out a price list and options.
Thanks!

I am taking a vacation soon (driving) and planning to take all the pieces and build my AE there. I wanted a case to put it in and a few days ago found a right sized metal case by warm audio (originally made to transport mics) for $99 shipping included. I am going to see how it works out but I like your travel cases a lot. Challenge is to have them deep enough and snug so you can close it, top and bottom fully patched. That would be a monster and I am pretty certain I would be down for one. I would pay your asking price if it does what I've suggested. Are you in the US? I wonder how much shipping would be. That's how these big online places compete so well, by offering "free" shipping.

I tested it out yesterday and it seems to fold patched really well. I made it so the lid of the case is about 3mm above the knob covers which seems to work well space wise and i think provides enough room for the patchwires. I'll try it with all the patchcables i've got later today to see how it does.
Yea, i'm in the U.S. and I've already been thinking about how shipping is going to be killer for some people! Right now I'm going to try to see if i can get the price under $100 for pine with a stain and polyurethane finish, while still making sure it's durable and will last a long time. A lot of time goes into finishing so I might even offer some bare wood (DIY Finish) or painted options which would cut down on the cost.

Both look beautifull and practical.
I ultimately want soemthing like the studio stand, but with space for an extra single row on the top.

If the price would be around €100 with shipping to EU (so a bit more in $), the travel case would be very much worth it for me. I got some gigs planned next year, and it would be great to have a solution for AE on the road that looks SO FANTASTIC 😍

In your pics it just doesn't look like enough vertical space. 3mm is not a lot, I would think doubling that to around 2-3 inches depending on your full on patched test you have coming up. Where in the US are you? I am in Maryland. These days shipping from coast to coast is murder, along the Eastern coast is ok still.

Hi All, thanks again for all of the feedback! It seems like my first effort on contributing to the AE ecosystem has been doomed by the efficiencies of global/ industrial production and extremely high costs associated with shipping a heavy empty box. Ah well, what is one to do?

Ah well, what is one to do? Maybe you could publish the "plans" so we could make our own? If it would be OK, it would be a great thing to put in the Wiki. No pressure, just a thought,

It's a shame that in these globalized times, international shipping should prevent this good idea from be realized.

Yeah, put together a set of plans, then sell the plans.

Ah well, what is one to do? I feel your pain, shipping & shipping companies can be a sad story a lot of the times, as a lot of AE users & builders have experienced first hand as well.. Appreciate your work tho!

I don't know if there is a forum for selling such plans as these, something that would mark the purchased PDF (or whatever) with a personalized watermark somehow (to reduce the possibility that someone will put them out there for free). I know that there are sites selling STL files for 3D printing, so would imagine that something is possible! Perhaps an ePub format?

Thanks for the thoughts / suggestions everyone. I think what I'll end up doing is creating a set of free plans for the wiki with a simpler design, and perhaps the next time I'm feeling bored around the house and the weather is nice outside my tiny shop I'll make a batch of ten or so to sell at a really low price, just to throw a little magic out into the world.

I you were to have access to a lasercutter or a cnc router via a makerspace you could make stl files (is that the format also used in laser cutters?) of your case design and sell those.

I'm just thinking aloud here ...
Sometimes business-models are tougher to build than the actual product.
Ikea figured that they could save on some labour and shipping costs by selling us the product cut-to-size but packed flat with some LEGO-style wordless instructions (saves on translation costs too). The cheap (often crappy) lightweight timbers they use reduce manufacture and shipping costs together (because quality timbers often weigh more). Once they got to global scale, they could get stuff made in countries closer to their target markets, further reducing freight and labour costs. Customers know all this but we still manage to imagine that some magic part of our new Björksta (in pieces all over the loungeroom floor) was still actually hand-carved by little woodland elves in Småland.
We can't really go to this kind of scale, but maybe there are some things we can do, depending how much flat-packing affects shipping costs (by sea, volume costs more than weight, whereas by air, both are important).
I like the idea of selling the plans. There might be enough interest for people to pay a donation after downloading without the need for copy-protection. Although you'd maybe make more on a physical case, the lack of costs in storage, materials, freight etc. might make it worthwhile. It would just be a trickle of money here and there but maybe worth the effort.
I am thinking to do something like this with the results of my own case-building adventures (so far, my case designs have actually damaged my AE instead of protecting it but, in retrospect, the standard AE housing was not really intended to be hung from a guitar strap and worn while jumping around a lot!).

After my occasional grumbles that my 20unit wide rack won't fit in the nifty old briefcases etc. that I regularly find on the street (whereas a 16-unit standard rack would have fit just nicely), the garbage deities smiled upon me in the form of a portable barbecue. Now there is a neat little barbecue sitting out there with no case. The case is plastic and has some moldings that I'll have to cut out, but I think it can become a protective road case for my rig. Once I have the new rack configuration assembled, I'll make or adapt a light padded gig bag as well. Photos to follow in a week or two. Posting teasers on Discord though .
