My first proper synth/keyboard was a Korg MS20 and, many years later I was in the market for a versatile polysynth the MS2000 was a natural for me to look at. Limited voice number wise compared to a lot of modern synths, it often still beats them on programmability (with most functions having a dedicated knob and rarely deep menu diving), sound (can do some lush strings without FX) and other functions like the arpegiator and sequencer - the latter can cause subtle harmonic changed to complete mayhem! It was my favourite arpegiator until I got a Novation Ultranova a few years later, that one is even more capable/varied. The main synth engine was the basis for the Korg microkorg, one of the best selling synths this century; being newer, and a more budget orientated keyboard, it made a few gains but also had some losses compared to the MS2000. Now, past the 20th year since I bought my MS2000 it is still my desert island synth and used on most of my music. Buy the right gear and you'll keep it!

I saw this A few weeks ago, and it emphasized many of the points you made!

I don't normally watch bad gear, thanks for this. 😊

Bad Gear is one of my favorite channels! There is always something interesting and the synth memes are hilarious!

This song is mostly MS2000 - the Snare (which started the song idea!) was on my newly purchase Novation Ultranova

Bit weird that I've never had the ms2000, but have had various iterations of what I understand is the same architecture - I've had the microkorg, R3 and Radias, the best of which by a mile I found to be the Radias... that thing has all kinds of stuff going on!
Always thought the ms2000 looked like a synth should.

That was a fun read, thank you. His whole site is pretty fun. He has some really interesting takes on quite a lot of gear, and the historical use of the gear to back up his opinion. You could do far worse than spending a little time poking around there.

I of course started out with a MicroKorg, but I always wanted an R3. Can’t wait to dive into some of the other musings on that site.

I still have my microkorg that I bought in 2008, it's a surprisingly deep synth.

It's sad that they decided to not do Severed Heads gigs anymore (never got to see them live) but he's doing lots of things still. Hi Synthesiser man-cave looks like a treasure room.

I really don’t get into that bit but I do like that vendors seem to discount their stuff to get extra marbles.”
