I finally did it, I connected my KeyStep via CV/Gate and I played the AE Modular. Amazingly, I hadn't done that before and it worked just fine (I was worried about the voltages). I wanted to record a simple piece that is 100% AE Modular, i.e. ambiences, sequences and (semblance of) lead lines... I think I may have overdone the NYLE BPF, but it did sounds so good.
I also worked out a way of using the TRIQ164 to provide the ratchet triggers, which I then passed through the OR2X4 with my gate to allow me to move the ratchet points in real time. There are two separate sequences and all sounds were recorded live and tweaked mercilessly - the WAVEFOLDER was good fun to drive the oscillator into the NYLE FILTER and I used the 2ATT/CV to fire a LFO into the CV to give it a bit of movement, so sometimes it does drop out when I was too enthusiastic.
I'll probably record some real lead at some point and do something with this -for now, it's on SoundCloud.
Have fun, I did

I wish you the same.

I took a punt on the Wavefolder module as didn't really know what it did, and it's one of my favourite modules for making smooth/full sound; I know it can do other stuff but putting the triangle wave into it and then manipulating you don't even really need a filter, got a lovely bass sound I've taken a photograph of so I can recreate it for a song when my studio is back together again...

As with all of these things, you can try out something new. I did that with the attenuated LFO modulating the Shape CV. It was a fine balancing act, as I said, as it did drop out sometimes so I had to find the sweetspot and adjust the output on the 2ATT/CV to get just what I wanted. I don't pretend to know what I'm doing, but I do know what I like to hear

Wow .. this is really amazing .. I have all the same gear - AE Modular, KeyStep, Wavefolder, Nyle Filter ... but I can't even begin to understand how to make this kind of sound! Shows how 30 years of MAKING Berlin School music is way ahead of 30 years of LISTENING to Berlin School music I don't understand the term "ratcheting" what is it and how do you achieve this? Also how did you get the sound to be so long and smooth, is this what the ratcheting does?

Shows how 30 years of MAKING Berlin School music is way ahead of 30 years of LISTENING to Berlin School music I don't understand the term "ratcheting" what is it and how do you achieve this? Also how did you get the sound to be so long and smooth, is this what the ratcheting does? Thanks, admin Ratcheting is a sequencer technique invented by Tangerine Dream in the 70's - or at least it was a huge part of their sound. It's a simple concept, like all of these things, but takes a little bit of thinkin to implement. It's the rapid re-triggering of a note within a sequence - ideally using a musically-relevant interval so that it jumps in between the syncopated delays. For a good example, try Stratosfear by Tangerine Dream. There are many ways to do it and robertlanger has honoured us by providing most of them with his modules. I have tried many ways of doing it, this time I used the re-triggering effect from the TRIQ164, once I found out how to access it. So, I fed the clock to TRIQ164 and also directly to the OR2X4, then the "Or"-ed output went to the 2ENV to trigger the 2VCA. This meant that the VCA was triggering when it saw either the output from the TRIQ164 or the clock itself. I then set up the steps of the TRIQ164 to have repeat on them and selected them on/off as I wanted to add re-trigger on the relevant steps. Then it was a case of fine-tuning the decay on the 2ENV and the repeat value on the TRIQ164 to make it musical. I also used the same clock, but through the DIVIDER to modulate both the NYLE filter and the shapeCV of the WAVEFOLDER - both using an LFO and passing both through the 2ATT/CV. It was a lot easier than it sounds and really made the sound move - a bit too much at times, where it disappeared. To get the smooth sound, it was combination of the slow setting on the 2ENV and using a shimmer setting on my reverb pedal to blur the sound a bit. It almost becomes polyphonic when combined like that. There was also some tape delay from another pedal, again to blur and warm up the sound a bit. Hopefully that was useful and/or not too detailed. It's difficult to know how much is useful For me, the AE Modular is helping me to realise the sounds that are in my head, and have been there for a long time. Other instruments can sometimes do this, or get close, but this modular helps me to feel like a sonic explorer and for such a decent price.

Thank you spacedog for this detailed explanation! As soon as my music setup is fully functional again I have to try this out! However I now know that I'm still a bit short on gear ... namely the divider (which is on order) and some additional pedals ... As for the pedals I was contemplating the Zoom MS-70 CDR which is a multi effects pedal which allows to chain effects and store those chains as different presets. It is also quite budget friendly.

That's a nice multi-effects pedal. Looking at the manual, I see that they reference some classic pedals and you can chain up to six effects - I imagine ony one of each type, but I could be wrong. That will certainly get you a long way into sound experimentation and for a decent price. I started buying guitar effects pedals (for my guitar) and now have quite a few that do a good job, so you won't go wrong in following this route. I do have a small portable rack with studio effects that I used to use live, but that doesn't get used much any more since I discovered the versatility of stomp boxes Once you have a few, you can set up parallel routings and move them around quite easily. I did think about one of these, but I can do most things with a small mixer and some imagination.

Completely by chance, I happened upon a free editor, the ToneLib Zoom, that covers the Zoom MS-70CDR as well as a lot of other Zoom pedals. It might be useful to consider for setting up the pedal at first, ready for live tweaking.

This track is wonderful. So nice, in fact, it has tipped the scales and convinced me that ordering an AE modular system is an excellent idea.

Many thanks for all of the kind words.
I'm especially pleased if this track helped even one purchase. The AE modular can really add such a huge amount to anyone's sound, as can be heard on the many styles that we have on show here.
Perhaps I'd better do something with that track now...

Hi @careck some info on the zoom pedals.. it’s worth considering the Ms-bt100 , a) because of the bluetooth editing/saving from iphone/ipad or other b) because it has the most memory for the individual fx modules, in the past year or so Zoom has made all the shop effects free BUT you cannot install everyone into a pedal you have to pick and choose.. not really a hardship.. BUT it’s also worth considering the MS-50 .. if you are ok with having a mono input and stereo outputs ( the bt100 and cdr ones have stereo inputs) since Zoom has now upgraded the MS-50 firmware to include ALL of the effects available in those other 2.. before 50 meant 50 fx, 70 meant 70 fx 100 meant 100 etc... but now all of them have about 150 fx available to install so there is little difference between them.. the MS-50 will probably be the cheapest to buy IF, as i said, you are ok with mono in.. AE being (kind of) mostly mono... ish This is Annoying as i actually have a spare MS-50 , and i could have brought it to Superbooth and handed it over to you if this conversation had happened earlier! doh!! are you still in germany? posting it to australia would probably negate any savings.. matt

I've dabbled with eurorack so not coming to modular completely new but enjoying learning the ropes on this AEM format. Spent some time this evening making big wave washes with the noise generator and filters - quite a relaxing activity!
