Hey! im trying to make a midi module* with the raspberry pi pico. I've made and soldered the first version recently, and attempted to run some code on it. Spoiler alert: it doesn't work at all. This was my first time designing a circuit, and my first time in a long time soldering, so it was a bit of an ambitious project. I should have tested it on breadboard more I suppose, but going forward I'll be working on a new design (which happens to not include the bit that was broken), testing it on breadboard and designing another circuit. Right now I'd like some community help though, mainly in looking for parts. Does anyone know if there's like a list of AE standard parts? If not, we should create one, with lists of good fits, alternatives and stuff. It'd help making new modules and replacing broken parts.
For headers, I've found a pretty much perfect match someone suggested from precidip, but with a different link, as the one they sent doesn't resolve for me. I got 8mm ones, which should be just below the plate since mouser didn't show any taller ones. Weirdly, they actually seem to be the same height as the ones I see on my Master I/O module, except they appear to have a plastic spacer below them? It looks like if you had 8x1 male headers, and took the pins out I guess. There's a clear line, above which my 8mm headers match perfectly.
Anyways, I'm looking for advice on 2 things mainly:
1. An aux port, like the boxy ones AE has. I searched Mouser for a long time, but they don't have a sort by height for these, so I had to excruciatingly check each data sheet for height. I didn't even end up finding any that were 8mm or lower. Surely there's a better way to do this.
2. A usb connector. Ok the problem here is that the pico already has a USB port, and the pins are not exposed or anything. So I'm not actually sure how I would get this to the front panel... If you look at the picture, it's out to the side uncomfortably. Maybe I could solder some wires onto the surface (this feels wrong to me though)? Maybe I could find some really short wire? Not really sure, and would like ideas on this. Also not sure if there's practically a difference between using USB A or C. My keyboard comes with an A cable by default so that was my first idea, but maybe there's a reason to do C instead?
That's about it for now. I'll keep trying to make this.

nobody? I'd love to know how to find those boxy auxy things :] I think it would make it easier for DIY modules to have a list of things that fit and work well to save everyone the hassle, or maybe it's just me that has trouble finding these.

I don't understand what you mean by the 'boxy aux port' - maybe a picture would help?  (I just got a Pico last week and have some things I want to play with, but there are plenty of projects ahead it in the queue unfortunately. And also the day job is really getting in the way right now!) |

I sat down and spent all my focus and energy for a few hours looking for suitable aux ports and could not find any. Maybe I'm navigating these labyrinthian websites wrong, I would really just like any advice to getting the parts I need! Though, in any case, I bet it would take anyone at least a while to find suitable parts, so it would seem to me like a list of suitable and nice parts for AE would make sense? Tell me if I'm wrong with that idea.

These websites can take quite a toll on their searchers yeah. I did notice that it is an acquired skill as well, i noticed that i'm getting better at it after a few years of finding nothing. If you decide to make a shared doc of some kind, i'd happily provide some links to the pots/spacers/.. i use |

I think you mean something like this: www.tme.eu/be/nl/details/acjm-mv35-2s/jackplug-connectoren/amphenol/I DID not check the size of the box, so not sure if it fits between an AE frontpanel and pcb behind it. Some clues for the search: you'd want to search audio Jack connection stuff, make sure you filter on 3.5mm Jack, female connector, and mounted/pcb mounted. |

Ah, those are 3.5mm audio sockets — those ones are known as “thonkiconn”s because for a while Thonk (uk diy synth shop) was the only place that they were generally available. They can now be found in many more places (e.g. AliExpress). I can’t remember the part numbers, but hopefully “thonkiconn” will help there www.thonk.co.uk/shop/thonkiconn/ |

Ali has some clear downsides: long wait times, often products are not as described (i had just fake IC's even), and a terrible search functionality. However if you find the right suppliers, you can get GREAT Quality for your price. Just takes some trial and error often. And then we just don't even get into the ethics (bad labor, shipping/ecology, data, product copying,...) of course.. But for my diy stuff i usually source local (mostly TME, they have a good price/Quality rating and 2 day delivery, which is great to keep on building without killing the 'hype' with two months wait times). I personally used Ali a lot when broke and without a job. Now i have (some) more financial room, i generally avoid it. |
