I don't really like buying gear for my studio that doesn't make noise. After getting my first Akai MPC I decided that the master keyboard being able to play the rest of the studio was a good way to go. For years I used a Roland D20 until its keyboard started failing (a common Roland feature....). I'd upgraded to the MPC2500 (which I still use), and bought several 19" rack synth/ samplers so a master keyboard replacement was needed.
To cut an enjoyable exploration story short, I chose the Studiologic Sledge. Yes, part of the reason was the orange colour! It is a lovely sounding synth, possibly my warmest digital synth but reviews kept raving about the keyboard and I can fully endorsed this. Still my master keyboard it is also one of the few synth I'll just sit and play just for the pleasure of it. A feature which is still good is that it is a simple, straight forward synth engine with nearly every parameter having a knob on the front panel - not quite as true after the V2 software update but I rarely use those features as actually don't work very well; the main culprit here is the user sample playback, bit of a pain in the arse! I've never played the newer, black edition and don't know if that's any better.
As with a lot of music tech companies, there doesn't seem to be much support if you can't find it online, but thankfully my Sledge just works, except for an occasional glitch where the display changes to the new program but the sound doesn't - it's done this from new and a software update didn't fix it. To me it's just part of the character of the machine, which I am really glad to be part of my musical journey.
