I made music many years ago, with a colleague who had a Supernova; it had a gorgeous sound, was easy to program but way out of my price range....
Fast forward a few years and I purchased the Bass Station 2; one of the greatest Monosynths of all time in my humble opinion. I must admit to not using all its potential, particularly with the firmware update post purchase but a regular go to for lead lines and weird stuff! Because I was so impressed, a few years later I was in the market for reasonably priced polysynth I naturally looked at Novation, as they had the Mini and Ultranova. I plumped for the Ultranova as its User Interface is one of the best I have ever come across, (and that includes synths with knobs per function!). The synth engines were pretty much identical (from memory) and the price difference was small - about £50 at the time I think. It must have been close to the time they discontinued the Ultra - shows sales win over specs every time!
This is one of about 5 or 6 synths I would never sell; it's versatile, sounds excellent, easy to program, superb arpeggiator which lead me off down several avenues in song writing, and plays very well with midi which is vital in my MPC based studio. The arpeggiator is great if you are stuck trying to create a baseline, or want totally weird shit to swamp the rest of the music 😁. I bigger keyboard would be nice but not a huge problem for me as I can play it from my master keyboard. It was playing up earlier this year, I opened the case and the cable was connected to the LCD screen incorrectly. That is the only problem it has had in my approx. 10 years of ownership. Very happy.
