... when it's midnight and you should be in bed by now but the AE Modular beckons ...
I always approach the empty canvas by starting with a basic patch ... OSC into filter into mixer and out. Then I try to make the oscillator more interesting .. this time by syncing it from another OSC. Then I use one or more LFOs (or looping envelopes when I run out of LFOs) to get movement into the filter cutoff. By using the CV control on the filter you can really fine tune to get just a slight movement. Then I just add more voices, a higher voice, this time using the totally underrated HPF of the Wasp Filter. You can get the High Pass Filter to sing and it's the most beautiful thing in the world! To round it off, adding some drums from the Topograf and bang ... straight into the phone via Audio Interface and USB. While it's all playing I can twiddle the resonance and cutoff knobs on the filters to "surf" the resonance waves to get more ringing, but always to stay just short of screaming ... unless I want them to.
This is why I love the modular synthesizer: even if you don't know music theory and can't play an instrument properly, you can just start patching and exploring and with a bit of luck and perseverance you can create something enjoyable ... even if it's just for yourself.

A nice live performance, admin. Time for that album soon. You make a point that is key for me: that of making music for yourself. I have been through a few incarnations of various groups and it was only really fun when we all just did it because we enjoyed what we heard at the same time as the audience, or the DAT (for those of you old enough ) Keep on enjoying what you do.

No need to know music theory and/or playing an instrument : only "passion" on this track !
