Heard/seen a few different ideas on making sliding CV/Note keyboard-slider's, like making one using VHS tape or dedicated slider pots that have some resistance, etc. - but what about instead of having a keyboard to have a slider + on/off button/contact and to use a potentiometer, with some geared wheels and belt or something like that. It's mainly for the performance purposes. Had any of you made anything similar? would love to see a different thoughts. Do you think it's even worth to try? Yes, I believe it's nothing new, but how would you achieve it - some tips and tricks would help a lot. Here's a simple sketch representing an idea:

Ondes Martenot: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ondes_Martenot You'll notice the "ring" controller...this uses the same loop-strung control method you're detailing, but on a larger scale and for dedicated (pitch) purposes.

thank you for the detailed answer, Lugia. That's what struck me - to know if anyone has done anything like it, if not - I'll just try to find some time for it and just go for it. It's just always good to have someone on your side

This is something I was thinking about many moons ago but put it in the too-hard-basket.
However, that was in pre-arduino, even pre-internet days.
I think it is doable. maybe cruising the streets for some discarded printers might yield some stuff to play with.
a small timing belt and two timing belt pulleys would be the go.
I was imagining a fairly translucent timing belt so I could put a LED ladder underneath. A half-baked extension of the idea was to set up a strain gauge between the axles so you could measure downward pressure at the same time. I still think this would feel great to use as an expressive controller because your fingertip is not sliding across some material.
I'm happy to give feedback if you want to try this. Bear in mind though that it will be pretty chunky, no matter how small the parts are for it.

A linear controller is definitely on my 'sunrise' list for the next couple of months.

I'm digging up a few designs.

However, I am keen to have a go at making some from scratch.
A patch of graphite scribbled from a 6B pencil gives a very consistent resistance change along its length. I am also experimenting with some of that silver circuit pen stuff (which unfortunately tends to be old and dry up inside the pen, so may be best to use straight away and not leave it in the drawer for a decade like I did).
I sometimes still find old VHS tape on the street, so it may be possible to have ago at the design on this venerable old archived Geocities page (oh the internet was more fun and less vertically-integrated back then)...
also...
a softpot-based one using Arduino to tidy up the signal (not really needed for a passive attenuator in AE format but cool if you want to further mess with the voltages).
another simple pencil carbon one ...

Forgive my hare-brained idea here, but if you're going down the mechanical route of using a video tape as a "belt" with a motor, then have you considered either doing something slightly different with much the same, or incorporating it into this design?
What I mean is instead of the finger ring attached to the "belt", imagine that belt of tape becoming static and you control a tape head mounted somehow to be easily controlled by your fingers and have that slide up and down the tape? Making a mechanical chopped up smaple player (like that thing in the film "Baby Driver").
I hope you get what I mean and I'm not throwing you off balance here. My mind tends to go off on odd tangents....
What do you think?
