Everybody knows that blind panels are a necessary evil in our racks. So I gave this one a purpose and turned it into a DIY "DIY Module" It features two small breadboards, fitting the AE Modular's color scheme, and connections for 5V, Ground (GND) and Clock ... or whatever else I plug the connectors on the module's back into. I'm not an electronics wizard, so my possibilities with that thing are probably very limited, but I did manage to put a standard CD40106 square wave oscillator on there Check it out:http://instagr.am/p/BoRUwiNidP1

Amazing idea and thanks for sharing it Very basic and (I guess) simple question - how hard would it be to run CV into this 40106 chip? Let's say from LFO to get a variable pitch, or from Bus CV. Would love to try to make a simple OSC which would interact with AE Modular, but my knowledge in electronics is still very, very basic...

take a look at this video for a good introduction to how/why the 40106 works (watch his other videos too, they are really instructive) so how to covert to voltage driven (cv) rather than current ( adding a pot) well, fortunately these kind of chips for synthesis stems from Stanley Lunetta, and is often referred to as Lunetta synths/modulars, theres a great set of resources for this at electro-music (and interesting corner of the internet ) electro-music.com/forum/forum-160.htmla quick search on google for "40106 cv' will inevitably take you there let us know how you get on, its an area Ive been meaning to play with on a breadboard for a while.... (p.s. i think some of the AE modules are similar in design to Lunetta , Robert could perhaps provide some details - including the difficulties you might encounter e.g. getting v/oct)

Thanks!Yeah, a couple of hours ago just tried to built one on a breadboard. a simple 40106 oscillator. Took the power from AE modular 5V and ground. But after connecting it to Delay module with other AE VCO modules it kinda takes over and looses the point to have more than one oscillator in a rack. Dunno what's wrong but perhaps I'm missing some steps in order to avoid this "overdub" issue. Will have to watch that video a few more times

Try to put a 10K potentiometer between the output of the 40106 osc. and the input on the Ae module, sending some of the 40106 signal "to ground".

I thought Id bump this after talking to Peter Edwards (bastl/casper electronics) about his planned EuroLab at Superbooth 19, seems like a really great idea and something that could quite easily be applied to AE modular too. (Peter mentioned he is already talking to robertlanger, so that was also great news) what I really like about Peters approach, is the way it scales... the 'desktop breadboard' allows you to comfortably work on a module idea, then once its gets to certain stage you can put it in your Rack, to really see how it 'plays' with your other modules... allowing you to determine if this is something you really want to build 'for real' as he also points out in the video, modulars are really great for playing with these ideas, since you only have to build the bit your interested in, so if you want to build a wacky oscillator, build that, and then see how it works with the filters you already have, or sequence it from your sequencer or midi keyboard. I also think Peter's enthusiasm is contagious, I came back from SB feeling pretty inspired to start building things

for those short on space .. or are like me 1u fetishists here is my take on it... Felix I like the fact you have plumbed in the 5v and ground.. for mine i was kind of looking to use +5v and ground from the front panel pin sockets... plenty of +5v’s on the vcswitches, 4att mixers and master module... only flaw at the moment is NO GROUND! i either have to update my Master module from revision 2 to 3 , or get the usb power module.. which means losing a unit just for the sake of that one facility.. request to Robert!! some more 1u modules with a sneaky ground socket slipped in there please . meantime I use mine to connect in light sensitive diodes, potentiometers to mix single patch signals between different modes and other non powered tiny breadboard idiocy.. and you can see that myself and felix are of the same ocd mindset,, in attempting to keep to the AE modular colour scheme!

from AE module CV output: one LED with 180 ohm resistor in series (other end to ground).
gaffa tape the LED to the LDR
resistor values will differ, depending on colour and type of LED. ledcalc.com/
Have I missed anything that might make smoke come out of the AE somewhere?

Thanks! Yeah, I ended up with that chip simply feeding voltage from another VCO (instead of 5V - just VCO). With "vactrol" (LED+light dependent resistor) it works too, but from experimental and sonic point of view - feeding voltage from another VCO and having a sort of FM modulation was the way to go, at least for me Neither way it sounds accurate and basically impossible to follow notes, but some crazy modulation is even better
