I’m playing a show on Friday together with VLK from Strategic Tape Reserve, so I needed a travel case for my AE Modular and ideally, most of the other gear as well. Last year I built a wooden box, which turned out way too large and what we brought in general was just overkill  So this year, I’m keeping things more compact. After some research, I ordered this aluminum case, which has the exact inside measurements for the AEM case. It is cheap and not of high quality of course, but it will do.  I only needed to move the power plug of the Master Module from the side of the AE system to the front panel, something which I wanted to do anyway.  The three Axolotis I want to bring are mounted inside the case under the AE Modular, which is held up by some wood pieces screwed to the sides and fastened with 3M Dual Lock, my weapon of choice for all things that need to be temporarily attached securely.  Other things in in the case are a small mixer, a Doepfer MSY2 MIDI to analog clock converter and a Korg nanoKontrol for one of the Axolotis. |

Here’s the whole setup:  The Linnstrument plays an MPE synth on one Axoloti, the Akai MIDIMIX controller is connected to an Axoloti drum machine and the Korg nanoKontrol plays an experimental Axoloti drone and noise synth, aptly titled “Demon Box”   Everything runs on the AE Modular’s 9V power supply by the way, except for the small mixer, which has its own wall wart, although if I had a barrel plug adapter for it, it could run on 9V as well. Yesterday night we practiced again with the whole thing and it works really well. VLK is bringing his Eurorack modular, a Digitakt (our master clock) and an Axoloti too. |

It's so nicely portable and there is even still empty space in the case  The Linnstrument 128 is almost the same size as a 2-row AE Modular system by the way. So if one had that and only took one AEM system, everything would fit into the briefcase! I patched my modular for the show yesterday and practiced some more.  I can even close the case when patched. To make sure that no wires are being pulled out by accident, I taped most of them down with Scotch tape.  |

By the way, those female to female jumper wires make great patch cord extensions.  |

Thats awesome!! Was moving the power plug to the front panel easy, any tips on how to do that? I am thinking about buying a case for my rack, too. At first, I thought I'll just buy a larger one so the power plug still fits in. But it looks so much better when the rack perfectly fits into the case... |

Thanks!! Doesn't look to complicated Funny, that Robert is also bulding them this way now! My Rack didn't arrive yet, so maybe when I am lucky, my master module will aready have the plug on the front panel

I just orderd a 9v battery pack to include it to the case, asI can charge it via my mobile Solar panel (Battery pack is 5v based). I will post pictures when i will build it.

See the other Post. Today was enough sun here in Cologne/Bonn so I will try to charge outside tomorrow as there should be more sun.
But as I used the panels already during the last 5 summers, there should be no problem at all to fully charge the battery.

Quite useful...the minimum depth on the "Economy" case is 100mm, which would allow for some foam behind any AE cases contained in it. Add foam in the lid, and you'll have a shockproof, bespoke, ATA-capable case for pretty much any size of typical AE setups for not a whole lot of money.

For anyone in Australia, you can duck down to Bunnings, grab one of these and a snag to get the job done on the cheap, too. Bunnings, from whence all blessings flow! Before congratulating myself on ordering the wide version of the AE rack case, I should've checked Bunnings and Jaycar. 
What I mean is that the wide AE rack cases are totally my thing but I realise that they will be hard to put in most of the travel cases out there.
I remember a friend back in the '80s had a business making custom lightweight road cases out of durable plastic sheet (slightly bendy vinyl/PVC kinda stuff). He could put one together pretty quickly using pop rivets and ready-made corner piece, hinges, latches etc. then cut the foam to size for whatever had to live inside it.
If I go that route, I'll report back. R. |
