Jugding from the video it looks super easy. But as a guy who knows nothing about electricty except it's scary, I gotta ask - is it possible with AEM? Does it require any (un)soldering or just putting patch cables into right inputs/outputs would be enough?

awesome! This should be really easy to do with the new master module which has dedicated outputs for +5v and GRND. Also the new Breadboard module has those outputs.

Digging a bit deeper for the info about this trick, it came out not all tapes are capable of beeing a ribbon apparently, vague suggestion: You need a better quality tapes for this, and also use a matte finish side as only this side of the tape is active here.

I have read about this possibility to use a VHS tape as ribbon; it's definitely worth as DIY project for AE modular - no risk! The tape is simply used as a resistor here, and used in a voltage divider circuit plus a buffer/amplifier with one opamp it can be used as as anice CV source. The only drawback is that you need a cable to play it...

you can also do this with heavily scribbled pencil on paper.

Ok, this has got me thinking about a quick and dirty ribbon controller without needing a probe.
If I have the parts available, I'll give it a go and try to make a video. However, it is a sunny day here in sydney and I will probably be outside for a some of it.
